Manybeads dismissed

KYKOTSMOVI—On April 18, the Ninth Circuit United States Court of Appeals
affirmed the dismissal of the Manybeads case. Manybeads challenged, on
behalf of Navajo families living on the Hopi Partitioned Lands, the
constitutionality of the 1974 Navajo-Hopi Settlement Act and its
relocation program.
“This ruling is a major step toward bringing closure to the partitioned
lands dispute,” said Wayne Taylor, Jr., Chairman of the Hopi Tribe.
“We have participated in several years of mediation, and we have
successfully reached Accommodation Agreements with Navajo families who
wish to remain lawfully on Hopi land and a settlement agreement with the
United States which received Congressional approval.”
Taylor said the tribe is grateful for the decision and that “we look
forward to continued implementation of the peaceful settlement we and the
Navajo families collectively reached a couple of years ago.”
Neither Roman Bitsuie, Director of the Navajo-Hopi Land Commission nor Lee
Brooke Phillips, lead attorney for Manybeads, could be reached for
comment.
